The small screen has churned out some pretty amazing series over the last 10 years, with spine chilling plots, endearing villains, and just downright brilliant storytelling and acting. Don’t bother keeping up with the ‘latest’ shows or the Kardashians if you haven’t watched these Top Five Old School Series.

5. Downton Abbey (2010 – 2022)

Any series that begins with the sinking of the Titanic is always going to be a winner. Period drama addicts will know that Downton Abbey offers love and loss, strong women defying the status quo the viewpoint of a wealthy aristocratic family as well as the servants storylines and how they affect the family. Plus it hosts the legendary Maggie Smith as the Grandmother of the 3 very different Crawley sisters and her dry one-liners never fail to disappoint.

4. Dexter (2006 – 2022)

Besides the fact that Michael C. Hall is just a phenomenal actor, this unconventional crime series about a Miami Metro blood splatter analyst who is an undercover serial killer preying on the “bad guys”.. is filled with dark humour and a complex character arc. Dexter is a smart guy, but has his share of doubts and anxieties as he tries to avoid getting caught while masquerading as a ‘normal’ person.

3. Prison Break (2005 – 2009)

A series about the brilliant Michael Scofield (and his brother Lincoln Burrows) and his elaborate plot to escape prison. Besides Michael’s astounding intelligence, the series is filled with an emotional backstory of several convicted prisoners and of course, the star-crossed love affair between Michael and prison doctor Sara Tancredi.

2. Game of Thrones (2011 – 2019)

An epic in every sense of the word, Game of Thrones is a fantasy geek’s dream and was brilliantly adapted from the George R.R. Martin’s original book series the Song of Fire and Ice. This Fantasy drama has kings, knights, crowns, swords, dragons and the undead, telling a complex story that hosts dozens of characters and a history that spans thousands of years. It’s outstanding in its character development and each person was very, very carefully chosen for their particular role. The end result? A beautifully tangled web of deceit, power plays and intrigue. Spoiler Alert! If the final two disappointing episodes of the series hadn’t sabotaged the storyline and undone what had been carefully built up over 8 seasons.. Game of Thrones would have been number one on our list and impossible to beat.

1. Breaking Bad (2008 – 2013)

There is nothing quite like Breaking Bad with its unrivalled characters and riveting story arc. Walter White’s transition from a mild chemistry teacher to the ultimate crime boss can only be pulled off by the quite brilliant Bryan Cranston. The series is a masterclass in film making with edge of your seat suspense all dusted with brilliantly scripted and humorous one-liners. And hey, it’s educational… Sort of.
